He made the people happy, or so the statue outside Anfield says about the late great Bill Shankly, but there is something inescapably sad about his resignation letter to Liverpool FC. The Scot took over the club in 1959 and up to his resignation in 1974 at the age of just 60 he led the Reds to several domestic cup and league titles.
