Rangers legend encourages Steven Gerrard to take up playing role

Steven Gerrard is likely to encounter some difficulties with the boardroom when it comes to recruitment this summer.

Rangers are not blessed with the kind of transfer budget that will allow for Gerrard to bring in every target he'd ideally like and, if he cares to save a few quid on new players, maybe he could dust off his boots and make himself his midfield linchpin. It sounds like a far-fetched idea but not according to Ibrox legend Andy Goram. Goram, a goalkeeper who made over 200 appearances for Rangers in the early 1990s, has genuinely suggested that Gerrard should consider a return to playing and lead from example in the centre of the park. Speaking to the Daily Record, Goram said: "If I was Gerrard, the first thing I’d be doing would be getting my boots out because he’s 10 times better than what has been in the Rangers team over the last few years.

"He’s 38 but put him in. Honestly. "After watching last season, no one can tell me he couldn’t do a miles better job than what there is in there. "He’d dominate the midfield against any team and it would be a good move."

It's been almost two years since Gerrard last played a competitive game, having hung up his boots following a spell in Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy and it remains highly unlikely that the former Liverpool captain will take time and focus away from his first foray into senior management by adding playing responsibilities to his role.
