Robbie Keane world record shut down in hugely frustrating fashion

In our eyes, Robbie Keane is a world record-holder.

Unfortunately, the big wigs that print the bloody book don't see it that way, nor do they look like they're going to change their stance anytime soon. The dudes over at Irish Abroad, a site dedicated to collecting statistics based on Irish soccer players, crunched all the numbers and have been campaigning to get the legendary Irish striker into the record books. They sent an application to have Keane's 19 consecutive years scoring at international level recognised by Guinness World Records (GWR). Keane broke Estonian striker Andres Oper's record of 12 years with his goal against Algeria in 2010 and extended it every year until he hung up his international boots for good in 2016. Although he's held the record for seven years, it has never been recognised. Fans would have been hoping he would receive recognition soon with Cristiano Ronaldo not far behind on 15 years on the bounce. https://twitter.com/SportsJOEdotie/status/866650383464239105 Irish Abroad's first application was swiftly rejected by GWR, but they weren't giving up without a fight. The language used in the rejection made suggested that there was an issue with the title of the record. So they resubmitted it with a different title. Unfortunately, they didn't get the response they, or any Republic of Ireland football fan wanted to hear.

"We are not able to change the titles upon request. These titles and records have been set up for everyone to apply to. We have other criteria than the ones mentioned that need to be fulfilled as well and we don't feel like this is a record we should monitor. Kind regards."

As one of our readers pointed out, GWR feel obliged to monitor records like how 'most drinking cans crushed with one breast in one minute,' but apparently 'most consecutive years of scoring in international soccer' is just not worth keeping tabs on. Makes sense...
