Interim Manchester United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy could reportedly leave the club once a new head coach is appointed, as per sources from the Telegraph.
With a breakthrough regarding the new manager today, it is understood that Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim is close to becoming the successor of Erik ten Hag, with reports stating he could be in the dugout as soon as the Chelsea match.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that a deal had been agreed, alongside the Portuguese club allegedly releasing a statement confirming United's intention to pay the 10 million Euros clause.
However, regarding Van Nistelrooy, it is understood that he never saw himself as a manager-in-waiting to succeed Erik ten Hag, but only to be his assistant manager.
The former United striker had previously held discussions with Championship club Burnley, however opted for Old Trafford due to 'unfinished business' and to develop his coaching career.
There will therefore be no repeat of the club appointing a former player and legend like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, despite how alluring the prospect may be.
It remains to be seen whether he will stay on following Amorim's appointment, regardless of his huge popularity within the fanbase.
