Jury discharged in Ryan Giggs trial after 23 hours as they fail to reach a verdict

The CPS must decide on a retrial by next week

The jury hearing Ryan Giggs' trial for assaulting his girlfriend has been dismissed, according to numerous reports. The group were dismissed after failing to reach a verdict in 23 hours of deliberations. The former Manchester United star and Wales manager, 48, denied a number of allegations made by his ex-partner Kate Greville, including assault causing her actual bodily harm, as well as behaving in a controlling or coercive manner towards her between August 2017 and November 2020. The trial lasted 12 days at Manchester crown court and is still yet to reach a decisive conclusion. Greville says their six-year on-and-off relationship became a "living hell", culminating in their split during lockdown in 2020. As well as being charged with deliberately head-butting his former partner at his Greater Manchester home on November 2020, he is also accused of elbowing her younger sister Emma in the face during an argument. While the case might now be on hold, prosecutor Peter Wright QC said he had seen "two very different" sides of the ex-pro during the case and insists he must now "pay the price". Giggs continues to deny the allegations.
