Spurs U21’s haven’t won the league despite finishing top of the table

While the first team end their season conceding goals left, right and centre as well as missing out on a Champions League spot, the Under-21s have been having a lot more success.

Wayne Burnett's side lead the Premier League 2 table with 46 points from 20 games, winning 14 and losing just two.

On any other occasion that would be enough to be crowned as champions but in true 'it is the history of the Tottenham', that's not the case.

Due to a change in format brought in at the end of last season, there are now no longer promotion or relegation spots in Premier League 2.

Instead there is now a play-off campaign when the top 16 of the 26-team league go into a play-off tournament.

As they finished top, Spurs will take on 16th placed Aston Villa in the round of 16 clash.

All of the games will be one-legged affairs and the side ranked highest in the table will host the fixture.

Should they get all the way to the final they will play for silverware between May 24 - May 27 and because they finished inside the top 12, they will play in the Premier League International Cup, where they will take on other leading sides in Europe.

It was a good start for Burnett's side though as they beat Villa 4-3 after Will Lankshear's goal in the 108th minute after it went to extra time secured their passage to the quarter finals.
