Calls have been made for later pub opening hours should Ireland qualify for this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
Independent TD Barry Heneghan has urged the Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, to temporarily extend pub licensing hours temporarily.
The Dublin Bay North TD stated that this would allow people to safely come together to support the boys in green.
He raised the suggestion in a parliamentary question, but is yet to receive a response.
The team are just two wins away from making it to this year’s World Cup which will take place in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Despite their place at the tournament yet to be confirmed, Mr Heneghan said the extension should be given consideration now rather than closer to kick-off.
“The matches are going to start after midnight our time,” he said.
“People will obviously want to support the team together safely and legally in a controlled environment.
“It’s not a permanent change, and it’s not going to be like a free-for-all. It’s a sensible exception for a major national sporting event.
“I don’t see why Irish fans, if, please God, we do qualify, should be left behind.”
The TD further explained that pubs will not be forced to open late for the matches, and while some workers won’t want to work the extra hours, others may be appreciative of them.
A spokesman for the Vintners Federation of Ireland backed the suggestion, highlighting the importance of major sporting events to pubs and communities, adding that they bring a ‘much-needed boost to trade’.
“Allowing flexibility around opening hours for World Cup matches would recognise that reality and help make the most of what would be a significant national occasion,” they continued.
Ireland will face Czechia in March, with the winner of that game set to take on either Denmark or North Macedonia to secure a spot at the tournament.
