Walter Mazzarri only signed a new deal back in September 2021. However, it emerged that there was a clause inserted into his contract to compensate for certain events that could occur. As per Sport Italia, although the 60-year-old has been sacked, the clause stated that he will have his contracted extended until 2024 should he be relinquished of his duties while Cagliari were not in the bottom three. They stated:

'Cagliari excuses Mazzarri but, paradoxically, extends the contract until 2024. With the sacking and the team not in the last three [relegation] positions, the renewal clause is activated. For the position, the only [Caligari] solution is Agostini'
