WATCH: Dirk Kuyt’s heartfelt Liverpool message may be enough to earn him freedom of the city

Let it never be said that Dirk Kuyt doesn't love Liverpool football club.

Although he wasn't the most talented footballer during his tenure at Liverpool, Kuyt's unrelenting work ethic and club pride saw him achieve cult status and the adoration of the Reds faithful. The Dutchman left Anfield in 2012 to join Turkish outfit Fenerbahce and he's since returned to play for his hometown club Feyenoord, but it's clear that Liverpool will always hold a special place in his heart. Kuyt recently faced a familiar foe in the Europa League, as the Eredivisie side played Liverpool rivals Manchester United in the competition. Unsurprisingly, Kuyt received his fair share of abuse from the Old Trafford support when his side lost 4-0 to the Red Devils in the lion's den. A large portion of 60,000-strong crowd inside the stadium repeatedly aimed taunts of 'you Scouse bastard' at him throughout the game. As he explained in a passionate personal video message that's been sweeping the internet, the chants did not get to him. In fact, he actually embraced the slagging because he was proud to be considered an adopted Scouser, even if it was intended as an insult.

“Normally when your rivals shout at you it’s not the best thing that can happen to you but actually it made me proud because I felt proud to be named a Scouser - an adopted Scouser - because for me Scousers are good people; hard-working people, committed people and people who never give up.”
