Watch: Patrice Evra was full of praise for Ireland’s performance

Patrice Evra is a man who really respects his opponents.

"It was difficult," the veteran defender said following France's 2-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Lyon.

"That's why I want to congratulate the Irish team because they were tough and it was a great game. They played a good tournament and all the fans and the Irish people should be proud of their team."

Although such comments can seem like typical post-game soundbites, Evra gives the sense of a man who takes nothing for granted, regardless of the stature of opponent. Which is why he was quick to remind this ITV reporter that it's not a certainty that England will beat Iceland. France will play the winner of the tie, and although Iceland have yet to face defeat in the tournament, the interviewer claimed England will "possibly, probably" win the game, and asked if Evra was excited to face them in the quarter-finals. The former Manchester United defender not only wasn't excited, he reminded the reporter that it's by no means a foregone conclusion that Iceland would lose.
