Wigan’s Dave Whelan claims there’s nothing wrong with calling Chinese people ‘chinks’

Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan has weighed in his opinion on the Malky Mackay debacle, and his quotes are unbelievable.

The Latics received backlash this week after hiring controversial manager Malky Mackay. The former Cardiff City boss came under fire after being at the centre of a scandal in which he sent a string of racist, sexist and homophobic texts to his work colleagues while managing the Welsh club. Among the texts included anti-semitic comments about a Jewish football agent and referring to Israeli club Macabi Haifa as the Jews. However, Whelan argued in an interview with the Guardian today that Mackay was right and implied that no offence was intended with the comments.

Do you think Jewish people chase money a little bit more than we do? I think they are very shrewd people. I think Jewish people do chase money more than everybody else. I don’t think that’s offensive at all. It’s telling the truth. Jewish people love money, English people love money; we all love money.

Another text sent by Mackay referred to South Korean footballers as ‘fkn chinkys’ before adding that there are ‘enough dogs to go around in Cardiff’'. Whelan contested that there wasn't much wrong with this either. He told the Guardian that the term "chink" is not offensive and that he used to say it about Chinese people when he was young.

If any Englishman said he has never called a Chinaman a chink he is lying. There is nothing bad about doing that. It is like calling the British Brits, or the Irish paddies.
