Seanie Johnston won his tenth Cavan senior football Championship on Sunday when his club Cavan Gaels defeated Castlerahan to raise their 14th ever crown. Think about that, Johnston has won ten county senior Championships when the majority of club players can only dream about winning one at any level. All of the Cavan star's triumphs have come this side of the millennium with his first Oliver Plunkett cup arriving in the year 2001. It's some achievement for the live wire attacker, and his man-of-the-match award in the big game only serves to highlight his lasting importance to the cause. He may be a veteran, but he has a wise head, and in a typically clever, shrewd display he picked the opposition defence off for five points, five points that eventually proved to be the difference between the two sides. This was the Castlerahan club's third county final loss in the last three years, and the Ballyjamesduff based outfit's struggles only serve to highlight the scale of Johnston's achievements even more. The Cavan Gaels supporters were out in force before the big game, and they had a special sign made up for Johnston. Johnston's was nicknamed 'Jelly' in his younger playing days, as a result of his slippery, constantly moving style of play. 'John 3:16' is a famous verse from the bible, coming from chapter 3, verse 16 of the Gospel of John of the New Testament and is commonly used in GAA circles. Others thought it was an ambitious prediction for Johnston to score that much in the game.
