Miami Marlins sign outfielder to record $325MILLION contract

Giancarlo Stanton's accountant is a very happy man today.

The Miami Marlins outfielder yesterday agreed a record breaking 13-year, $325million deal with the Florida ballclub, smashing the numbers involved in previous largest contract in professional sports history, the $292million pact Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera signed last March. It's a stunning commitment to a single player by a club notorious for its thrift, especially given that 25-year-old Stanton, who has walloped an impressive 154 homers in his five-year career, hasn't faced live pitching since taking a fastball to the face in a game in September.

Some other remarkable numbers from the deal: - Owner Jeffrey Loria has committed more than twice the $158.5million he paid for the Marlins in 2002 to Stanton. - The Marlins entire player payroll last season was just $47.5million, the second lowest in MLB. - Stanton at $6.5million last year, was already the highest paid player on the team.
