Irving, who has been a vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and has campaigned for great social justice in the USA, was asked about the gesture during a media availability session with The Nets on Tuesday. He commented:
"I just want to keep continuing to fulfil our purpose in serving a lot of the underserved communities. Those don't necessarily get the same attention from just others around. So just trying to do my part with service, that's all."Irving, who won an NBA title with the Cleveland Cavaliers, was recently stood down from active duty and he cited 'a lot of family and personal stuff' as the reason for his absence. He apologised to the Nets fans for his time out and said he was 'happy to be back'. He will line up with superstars Kevin Durant and the newly signed James Harden in the coming days and weeks.
