You may not realise but Ireland are competing in a World Cup at the moment

The Irish Footgolf team are in Argentina preparing to take on the world's elite.

If you are unfamiliar with the sport, it is exactly what it sounds like, a hybrid sport that combines football with golf. Basically you play a shortened golf course with the aim of kicking a football into enlarged holes while using the same scoring system as the good walk spoiled. The Footgolf World Cup kicked off in Buenos Aires on Wednesday and a team of Ireland's 13-best players are currently sitting in 10th place out of 26 teams after the first day of action. We know they have the best kit, bit what are the Irish team's chances? Irish number one Gary Mullin is hopeful that the boys in green and white (and longpants) can go all the way.

"Ireland go to Argentina with a great chance of winning the World Cup. We have all our strongest players available and we hope to avenge narrow defeats to Team UK and Switzerland when we get out there." "Hopes are high in the camp and even though training has been disrupted by the recent storms across the country, that didn’t stop players getting out to practice even on Christmas Day.”

Irish Footgolf Association President Ronan Cunningham hopes that Ireland's presence in the World Cup will raise the profile of the sport which in turn will make for a stronger domestic league next year.

"We are targeting European success as well as increasing prize money and the prestige of the Irish Footgolf League during 2016." “With courses in nearly every county in Ireland and with the World Cup on the horizon, the future of Footgolf in Ireland is bright.”
