Ireland dealt frustrating blow ahead of must-win Wales game

In order to keep their World Cup dream alive, the Republic of Ireland need to beat Wales.

Scotland drawing 2-2 with Slovenia has left the Republic of Ireland with a very simple task that will be pretty tough to carry out in order to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup alive. A win over the Welsh in the Lion's Den would see the Boys In Green thrust themselves into one of the best second place team spots that would see them enter the play-offs. However, anything other than a win will ensure a very dull summer for Irish internationals next year. With such a crucial match to play, the Irish could have really done with a full-strength side. Unfortunately, that won't be the case. Striker Shane Long has been ruled out of the match with injury. In a game that requires goals, Ireland will be without one the top marksmen in their squad. Long sat out training with a dead leg twice last week but was fit enough to start against Moldova before being replaced by Sean Maguire in the 82nd minute. Daryl Murphy, who bagged a brace against group whipping boys Moldova on Friday is likely to get the nod up front, while Long's absence could open the door for Maguire or Scott Hogan to make a serious impact on the game.
