Rory McIlroy talks us through that epic, 40-foot putt on 16

This is the putt that essentially places Rory McIlroy right in Jordan Spieth's grill.

Sky Sports called it a surge. The record books have it down as a 71. Either way you look at it, McIlroy had a good day. There were bogeys for the Northern Irishman - there usually are at the Masters - but enough shots were picked up over the course of a tough, windy day. Shot of the day arrived on the par four 16th when McIlroy snaked in a 40-footer to go -3.

McIlroy talked reporters through those tense, thrilling moments from putter to hole. He said:

"I mean, it's one of those ones, I started it, I don't know, maybe six feet left of the hole and just got it up there, really, really high and basically let gravity and wind take it the rest of the way. "I was just looking to 2‑putt, try to get it within two or three feet of the hole, and it was a bonus when it dropped. "Definitely wasn't... obviously the objective is to try and hole the putt, but I would have been very happy if it had finished two feet away, and I made a three."

He certainly did. Now, he goes out with Spieth, the leader, in what should be an enthralling third round.
