Conor McGregor timed this one well. 'The Notorious' was conspicuous by his lack of social media commentary, last weekend, as UFC 241 took place. McGregor remains a massive fan of the fight game and often takes to Twitter during big pay-per-view nights. Many would have expected him to jump on-board, in the early, Irish hours of Sunday morning, and give his take on Nate Diaz' impressive comeback win over Anthony Pettis. The pair had split two cracking fights back in 2016 and there has long been talk of a trilogy bout. From McGregor's side, there was not a single character typed. Diaz, too, looked to have moved on. The Californian called out Jorge Masvidal to fight for what he termed 'the baddest motherf***er in the game' belt. Masvidal was in the crowd and he gleefully cheered and nodded as Diaz teed up an enthralling welterweight bout. McGregor instead waited until August 20, the three year anniversary of his UFC 202 victory over Diaz. In his Instagram post, the 31-year-old praised Diaz for his victory and set the stage for that possible trilogy fight:

'3 years to the day myself and this Mexican warrior went to war. 'Congrats on the win this weekend Nate, it was motivating to see it for my own comeback. I don’t blame you not mentioning me for the trilogy bout post fight, you know what I’m like when I get going. Vicious. 'I loved the round 3 style from round 1 that you implemented. It’s what I was hoping you would implement for this bout and was glad to see you do it. 'I’ll be prepared for it when we go again. If we go again. If not, respect always. A war for the ages. No bitch talk. Just real shit.'

He will also be monitoring the UFC 242 fight between lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and challenger Dustin Poirier, next month. Should Poirier win, McGregor would be lined up as his next fight. Should Nurmagomedov defend his belt, the Dubliner may be paired off against Tony Ferguson in a No.1 contender's contest.
