Formula One set to introduce Virtual Safety Car in 2015 after driver trials

The Virtual Safety Car has been given the green light.

The Formula One and the FIA have been working together over the last number of months to devise the best solution towards better controlling of driver speed.  And the Virtual Safety Car has gotten the nod. The VSC imposes speed limits the whole way around the track for incidents that do not require a safety car and, after testing out a number of different ways of introducing the feature during practice sessions in the final rounds of the 2014 season, the drivers have accepted the new approach. They had trialed ways of imposing different speed limits at different sectors of a course but the unpredictability was a concern and, after Jules Bianchi's horrific crash in wet weather in Japan, they have gone for the safest option. "Most of the drivers preferred the VSC approach, because [with the single sector] they were concerned about braking from high speed down to the slow speed limit," an FIA spokesperson told Autosport Magazine. "Some drivers were worried they might not see it, and some drivers were worried they might see it too late. And these large differences of speed could cause some difficulties.
