Australia take on England next week and a win, which is looking unlikely against Eddie Jones' men, would consolidate them in third place. New Zealand are streaking clear in first.
The top four sides, come May 2017, will be confirmed as top seeds ahead of the World Cup 2019 pool draw in Tokyo.
Ireland are in a strong position and have a Six Nations fixture schedule that many would see as favourable - England and France at home and three away games. Do well in those and Ireland could climb as high as second by the end of the championship.
The new threat for Joe Schmidt's side would appear to be a Wales side that recorded a badly needed win over stuttering South Africa at the Millennium Stadium. With Rob Howley as caretaker coach, Wales are just two ranking points off Ireland.
It is looking good for Ireland to get that top seeding but there can be no letting up next year. Under Schmidt, we don't expect that to be an issue.

Fans tear into Leo Cullen after the Leinster boss slams media actions
A war of words! Following Leinster’s defeat of Toulon yesterday, head coach Leo Cullen took advantage of the situation to rub it into what he perceives as an unfair media. Despite continued appearances in Champions Cup finals and a semi-final loss to Northampton last year, as well as URC titles, Leinster do face their fair […]

Brilliant footage shows Toulon doing training drills on Dublin street ahead of Leinster loss
This is great! Ahead of their Champions Cup semi-final against Leinster this afternoon at the Aviva Stadium, Toulon were seen training in a rather unusual spot. Instead of a field or the gym, they were filmed on a Dublin street doing maul drills, while others causally tossed the ball around. It is unclear exactly where […]
