Tommy Bowe knows who he wants to replace Jared Payne

Professional rugby is a harsh environment in which to operate. Within two hours of Jared Payne having his World Cup ended, questions about his replacement were coming thick and fast. Ireland scrum coach Greg Feek and captain Paul O'Connell both lauded the departing Payne in this afternoon's Captain's Run, at the Millennium Stadium, but demurred from discussing who would take his place. Feek confirmed that a replacement will not be chosen, and informed, until after Ireland's final Pool D match against France. Tommy Bowe was more forthcoming. The likely lads are Andrew Trimble, Fergus McFadden, Noel Reid or, although less likely, Gordon D'Arcy. Bowe said, "It's a big blow to the squad... Jared has been one of our most consistent players over the past couple of years and he has played some outstanding rugby. "Losing a player like that is going to be a massive blow to any squad. "It's a disappointing blow to us but we know that is the nature of rugby. There's always going to be injuries. We've been very fortunate, in losing only one player, when compared to other countries." The winger added, "Trimby [Anndrew Trimble] is a really good mate of mine and it would be great to see him out here. "He's a fantastic opportunity to be here. He was a guy that was training exceptionally well in pre-season. "He's a very experienced customer. He has shown the quality he has. When it comes to the big matches, we know what we can expect from him. "He'll definitely be one person who is eagerly hoping he will get the call. "Unfortunately, I know as little as anyone at the minute."
