Martin O’Neill cuts six players from Ireland squad ahead of England friendly

Kevin Doyle, Anthony Stokes and Adam Rooney among those to miss out.

Martin O'Neill has trimmed the Republic of Ireland squad ahead of next week's friendly against England. Simon Cox, Adam Rooney, Alan Judge and Anthony Pilkington miss out, as do Anthony Stokes and Kevin Doyle, as O'Neill cuts the playing panel from 33 to 27. Doyle looks to be facing a fight for his international future. The Wexford native, who recently moved to Colorado Rapids in MLS, has 14 goals in 61 international games, but doesn't appear to be in O'Neill's immediate plans. Aberdeen striker Rooney, who lead the scoring charts in Scotland, misses out, as does Brentford midfielder Judge. Both players earned their first call-up to the senior Irish international side, but won't be capped this time out.
