A teacher in Dublin for several years, Varley only transferred from his home club Garrymore in March and has been rewarded with a county medal at his first attempt.
"It is my first year," he told Oisín Langan on Dublin GAA's Mixlr page. "I was delighted to just get on the team. I set myself small goals. It is a great feeling to win a county championship."
With four points from play, Varley's performance certainly caught the eye.
