The former Cork goalkeeper recently revealed that he was one of two people to write character references for sportswriter Tom Humphries, who on Tuesday was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for the defilement of a child.
David Walsh, chief sportswriter with The Sunday Times, also provided a character reference for Humphries.
On Tuesday, he issued a statement through the Press Association in which he said that he unequivocally condemned Humphries’ actions and apologised unreservedly for comments made about the case in a 2012 radio interview, comments he described as “insensitive and ill-judged”.
