Dublin fans distance themselves from embarrassing proposed tribute to Diarmuid Connolly

What do Nelson Mandela, Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter and Diarmuid Connolly have in common? It appears that all three have been accused of crimes that they did not commit, and were persecuted and hounded by a legal system set up to turn good men bad. Well that's what you would think the St Vincents man is going through following his red card last week if you paid close (and too much) attention to the social media output of various quarters over the past six days. Of course fans are entitled to dispute and debate the legitimacy of the ban, but from some of the tweets and Facebook posts you would be led to believe that the decision not to rescind the one-match ban he received as a result have been an horrible affront to his humanity. That's why a Dublin supporters group came up with what they thought was a wonderful idea to try and organise Dublin fans to chant Diarmuid Connolly's name in the 12th minute of tomorrow's game for the wing-forward.   We imagine the bright sparks got the idea after last week saw a wonderful round of applause for the late Darragh Doherty in the 13th minute. However today's idea went down like a lead balloon as you could imagine and they swiftly deleted the post. https://twitter.com/patmoore97/status/639782067954405376 Some Mayo fans called it disrespectful to the late Mayo minor, while a more sensible Dublin fans group has now issued a statement criticising the earlier Facebook post and distancing themselves from the idea.
