‘If the first incident is a yellow card, god help us’

RTE GAA pundit Anthony Daly has questioned whether Conor Gleeson deserved the first of two yellow cards in Sunday's Munster Hurling Championship match between Waterford and Tipperary.

Gleeson and Tipperary forward Seamus Callanan clashed in the first-half with both men earning yellow cards before Gleeson was dismissed a few minutes later after dragging Patrick Maher down while he was baring down on goal. https://twitter.com/TheSundayGame/status/1130108429274451968 https://twitter.com/TheSundayGame/status/1130104211192987649 Daly said on The Sunday Game:

"He knew Bonnar was baring down on goal and he took him down rugby style almost. That's a yellow. But if the first incident is a yellow card then god love us with what's gone on during the week there with wired up umpires calling referees."

Earlier this week, the GAA’s National Referees Committee issued new guidelines and instructions to all intercounty referees in an effort to clamp down on head-high and dangerous tackles in both football and hurling. It was made clear that referees will be paying greater attention to the high tackle and the “illegal charge/collision” in both codes.
