Under-14 boys GAA team in Dublin reportedly mugged at knifepoint

In a separate incident, a man taking part in a soccer match in Tipperary was also shot at the weekend.

Some members of an under-14 boys GAA team were reportedly robbed at the weekend after disembarking from a bus. RTÉ News states that the incident happened to players on the South Dublin GAA club Ballyboden St Enda's and that it is understood the boys were mugged at knifepoint. In a statement to JOE about the robbery, a Garda spokesperson confirmed:

"Gardaí received report of an incident of robbery that occurred at approximately 5.40pm on Saturday, 6th of January 2024 on Taylor’s Lane, Ballyboden, Co Dublin. "A number of belongings were taken in the course of this incident. No injuries were reported. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."

According to RTÉ News, mobile phones were taken during the robbery. JOE has reached out to Ballyboden St Enda's for a statement.

This was not the only out-of-the-ordinary sports-related incident that occurred in Ireland last Saturday. In separate news, a man taking part in a soccer match in Tipperary was shot. "Shortly after 9 pm, Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at a sports venue in Rear Cross, County Tipperary, where an adult male participating in a soccer match under floodlights sustained a gunshot wound to the arm," a Garda spokesperson said. "He was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel and brought by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for further assessment. His injures are not life-threatening. "Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses. They are particularly appealing to individuals who may have been hunting in the area at the time to come forward. "Anyone with information is asked to contact Nenagh Garda Station 067-50450 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111." The man injured played for Rearcross FC, with the club stating in an update on Sunday that it is "totally shocked at the turn of events".
