Donegal’s impressive start to the National Football League continued in Letterkenny on Sunday as Jim McGuinness’s side produced a commanding display against Mayo at O’Donnell Park.
The hosts controlled the game from the early stages and secured a convincing 1-19 to 0-14 victory. Oisín Gallen made a strong impact on his return with six points, while Conor O’Donnell delivered a man of the match performance with 1-3. With both teams unbeaten before throw in, the fixture had been seen as an early test in Division 1, but Donegal passed it with authority.
After the final whistle, coach Neil McGee revealed that there has been a shift in how the team views the league this season. Speaking to TG4, he explained that the squad are now aiming higher due to changes in the schedule.
“Yeah top of the league, we're on six points, probably safe so probably push on now and aim for the final.
I think the schedule allows a bit more time this year for us to push on whereas last year we were out the following week. I think we've four weeks this year so it's a bit more realistic”
Last season’s condensed calendar meant Donegal had little time to balance league ambitions with championship preparation. The current structure offers a longer break at the end of the campaign, allowing the management team to target a deeper run without compromising their long term plans.
On the pitch, Donegal showed growing confidence and composure. They dictated the tempo throughout and never allowed Mayo to build sustained pressure. The result strengthens their unbeaten start and sends a clear message to the rest of Division 1.
Attention now turns to a Round 4 clash with Armagh, another major test as McGuinness’s side look to maintain momentum. If Sunday’s performance is any indication, Donegal’s new approach to the league could make them serious contenders as the competition unfolds.

An interesting take. Results in the first weekend of the Munster SHC went as everyone thought they might, with Clare beating Waterford, and Cork taking down Tipperary. However, the performances may have surprised some, with the Déise looking strong in defeat, while All-Ireland holders Tipp were lacklustre. Premier boss Liam Cahill acknowledge as such after […]
