Shane McEntee slams Twitter trolls as he defends his father’s time in charge of Meath

Andy McEntee has stepped down as Meath manager, after six years at the helm.

Last weekend, Meath were knocked out of the All-Ireland qualifiers at the hands of Clare, and following their exit, the county manager has handed in his resignation. In a short statement, McEntee thanked the players and staff who worked under him during his time there.

“After completing 6 years as manager of the Meath Football team, I am stepping down from the position and will not be seeking a third term,” McEntee said, via a statement through Meath GAA. “It has been an honour to have been manager of the Meath Senior Football team and I’d like to thank the Chairperson of Coiste na Mí, John Kavanagh and former chairpersons Peter O’Halloran and Conor Tormey for their full support during my tenure.

“But most of all I’d like to thank all the players and management teams that I have worked with over the years. I wish the county every success in the future.” Team captain and son of Shane, Andy McEntee had to leave the squad during the league campaign as he had to do a tour of Mali with the Irish Defence Forces. The defender however, flew home to help his county out, and when responding to a tweet that wrongly accused the county board of paying for his flight because of nepotism, he didn't bite his tongue.

Despite a disappointing 2022, McEntee did lead his squad to Division One, and also secured them a run in the Super 8's back in 2019.
