A joke about Tom Stanley’s hair and Constitution Hill turned into one of the standout moments from the latest episode of The Paddock.
The new season of the horse racing podcast is now under way, and during a chat about how sport is changing online, Oli Bell, Rishi Persad and guest Dom Matcham ended up on a very funny tangent about racing, fan content… and haircuts.
The moment came when Bell joked that Stanley should let his hair grow out until Constitution Hill wins a race over hurdles.
The panel were talking about how audiences now love watch-alongs, live reactions and fan-led content, especially in football, where supporters, such as United Strand, film themselves instead of the sport itself.
They referenced the kind of reaction content made famous by fan channels and the now-familiar format of people tuning in as much for the fan meltdown as the match itself.
And their point was simple: horse racing could absolutely do more of that.
Instead of only polished coverage and traditional analysis, there is a growing appetite for more informal content, people chatting through races, reacting in real time, sharing bets, and showing the emotion of the sport as it happens.
So yes, the Constitution Hill hair joke got the laugh but the bigger takeaway was that racing media may need to lean harder into the kind of content fans already love everywhere else.
The Paddock is hosted by Oli Bell and features weekly tips, debate and guests from across horse racing. You can watch on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts.
