Cork’s Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan set to fight Canelo Alvarez

Spike O'Sullivan may be fighting the biggest name in boxing this year.

Cork native Gary 'Spike' O'Sullivan has made it clear that he wants to fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. It looks like everything's falling into place to make that fight a reality. On May 5, the Mexican superstar will have his highly-anticipated rematch against Gennady Golovkin. Their first bout was an instant classic, although the dodgy scoring which saw them share the spoils left a sour taste in a lot of spectators bouts. Regardless, the sequel promises to be an even bigger spectacle and the night before, O'Sullivan will have his chance to shine. The recently-crowned WBO Inter-Continental middleweight champion is set to fight on May 4 in Las Vegas. The big one

O'Sullivan told World Boxing News that regardless of the result of Canelo-GGG II, he's fighting the Mexican next. The match-up is expected to go down in September. Mexican Independence Day is September 16, so Canelo would probably like to return to the ring on this date.

“The fight I’m looking at is Canelo after May 4th so I hope that Canelo obviously beats Golovkin. I’m going to fight him regardless but it’s much better for me if he wins." “I’m looking forward to it you know, I’m very excited about it for that fight I believe I’m possibly the hardest puncher in the whole division. If Canelo beats Golovkin I’d love the opportunity to knock him out and prove I can mix it with the best in this division."

If Canelo beats Golovkin, he will hold the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, IBO, the Ring and vacant lineal middleweight titles. Not only would he easily be the biggest middleweight on Earth, he would arguably be the biggest star in boxing if he beats the Kazakh.
