World champion boxer Paul Bamba has died just six days after winning his final fight and becoming the WBA Gold Cruiserweight world champion.
Bamba, who fought Rogelio Medina Luna in New Jersey to win the title, was a 22 fight veteran who posted a 14-fight winning run this year.
He was also the first boxer to sign to the new management company of pop star Ne-Yo.
Ne-Yo and Bamba's family released a joint statement yesterday (December 27) to announce the news.
"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives," the statement reads.
"He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything, he was a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination.
"We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief."
Bamba was a rising star in the boxing world and clocked up a 19-3 record in the ring.
He had called out Jake Paul for a fight and was scheduled to fight Tommy Fury in November before it was called off due to weight issues.
Jake Paul has led tributes to Bamba, alongside KSI and boxing promoter Kalle Sauerland, who said the news was completely 'out of the blue'.
Bamba posted on Instagram just days ago, celebrating his year in the ring and his achievements to date.
'This year I set out with a goal. I did just that," he wrote.
'Wasn’t easy there were many obstacles that I adapted to overcame and kept on the path we set regardless of extenuating circumstances. 14 fights 14 knockouts ending with the WBA GOLD cruiserweight world title.
'Blessed to have my family my team and all my supporters along the way. That being said if you got what some might call an “outlandish goal” GO chase it. Anyone who thinks that isn’t as brave as you, prove people wrong!'
