A small silver lining for Mayo after their heavy loss to Roscommon was the performance of Kobe McDonald, who scored 0-06 in the 1-18 to 2-25 defeat.
However, as with every good-news Kobe story, it is bittersweet for Mayo fans, given his impending departure for Australia at the end of the inter-county season.
Following the game, boss Andy Moran revealed that the youngsters forced his hand for selection with his performances in training.
He said: "He's a great kid.
"I couldn't not play him, he was our best player in the A versus B game last week, so he had to play."
Moran added: "Roscommon were hungrier for the ball today than us, and that's the most disappointing thing for me.
"We know now with the new rules that you need to be good on your own kickout, exceptionally good on their kickouts, and you need to win the breaking ball.
"Unfortunately today, it felt like we got well beaten.
"We do know that we are in the first year of a process.
"We came in—we didn’t sign a one-year deal—we came in for three years to build.
"You see with the new rules, you saw with Galway v Leitrim last week, and the result today up in Ulster; if you are not on it and you’re not really focused on what you need to do, unfortunately, you’ll get results like today."
