Ashbourne Cup camogie rocked by ‘farcical’ controversy on the eve of the competition

The Ashbourne Cup camogie weekend has been rocked by UL's elimination on the week of the competition.

It had seemed as though the Limerick college had pulled off a miraculous feat in their final group game, when they beat Maynooth by 34 points. They had finished the group on the same number of points as DCU and TUD but, according the CCAO's official tables that were shared on their social media channels, a 34 point was exactly what they needed. Shared before their match with Maynooth, the tables showed that they were 33 points behind UL on score difference. DCU since made an objection and with the matter having been taken to the THDC, on the basis of a scoreline submitted by a referee and a breakdown somewhere in between, it was communicated to UL that they had been eliminated. DCU were going through in their place. The Ashbourne Cup finals weekend take place this weekend and, on the back of the controversy, the UL Camogie panel have released the statement that you can read below. UL say that the debacle makes a 'farcical situation out of the whole competition.' They say it sets a 'precedent unheard of in any sport,' and they have not been served 'natural justice.' As things stand, UCC, DCU, MTU Cork and TUD will contest the grade's semi-finals.
