Sunday was a day to forget for Derry man Jude McAtamney, as the Denver Broncos scored 33 4th-quarter points, to defeat his New York Giants side by 33-32.
The 2020 Ulster U20s winner came in for severe criticism after missing two Point after Touchdown attempts; one in the second quarter to put his side 14-0 ahead, and one late in the fourth with the score at 32-30.
Coming into the game, McAtamney was 10 from 11 in PAT kicks for his NFL career, which are one-point extras from the 15-yard line after a touchdown is scored, and are rarely missed.
After the game, former Philadelphia Eagles player, Jason Kelce, posted a dig on social media.
He said: “Giants kicker is gonna have to fly home on Southwest.”
However, the post, which referenced the low-fare airline, was quickly deleted.
Despite blame for the misses being placed on the Giants snapper Casey Kreiter, McAmtamney was having none of this in a respectable post-match interview.
He said: “I suppose even with that I still should be able to get guys out of a hole, like if the snap is not perfect or if the hold is not perfect.
“I’m a professional kicker I’ve got to be able to make those. Pull those guys out of hole if I need to.
“Casey said the snap was on him but look the ball was down and the laces were good, I’ve just got to make the play.
“I don’t like to shy away from making mistakes."
